John Singer Sargent

1856 – 1925

Born in Italy to American parents, he spent his early years in Paris before establishing himself as a painter based in London.

From the late 19th to the early 20th century, he enjoyed immense popularity as a portrait painter for international high society.

His greatest strengths were his sophisticated and elegant atmosphere, and his brilliant, dynamic brushwork, often employing impasto.

However, from around 1907, he withdrew from commercial portraiture and began traveling across Europe with artist friends and acquaintances.

In his later life, he devoted himself to landscape paintings and watercolors, often employing the plein-air technique during these travels. He vividly captured the changing natural light and the atmosphere of the moment, leaving behind numerous freer and more experimental works.
