The Moon and the Stars

Four graceful women float gently in the pitch-black expanse of space. Illuminated by a mysterious light that seems to emanate from within them, they personify the passage of time: the Evening Star, the Moon, the North Star, and the Morning Star.

When one thinks of Mucha, many likely envision bright female figures surrounded by vibrant flora and decorative frames. However, in this series, his last set of decorative panels, the familiar opulent crescent moons and background embellishments have been deliberately removed.

At the time, Mucha, deeply interested in mysticism, sought to explore a deeper meaning in the theme of celestial bodies, moving beyond mere 'beautiful interior decoration'. He intentionally lowered the overall tone of the compositions to emphasize the mystical quality of starlight, and the women's poses shifted from their previous sensual forms to serene, dramatic ones, as if in meditation. (For instance, in the 'Moon' panel, a woman covers her mouth, seemingly asking the viewer for silence.)

Furthermore, his profound insight is embedded in the plants subtly bordering the compositions. Campanula, resembling evening bells (the Evening Star), white poppies symbolizing deep sleep (the Moon), star-shaped edelweiss blooming in high mountains (the North Star), and laurel wreaths celebrating the glory of a new day (the Morning Star).

Behind the facade of the glamorous Parisian poster artist lay Mucha's philosophical and spiritual sensibility. This series, quietly radiating light in the darkness, is a deeply beautiful, prayer-like work in which he sought to depict the unseen mysteries of the cosmos.
