This is an advertising poster created in 1903 for Lefèvre-Utile, the historic biscuit manufacturer from Nantes, France.
Depicted is Sarah Bernhardt, the legendary queen of Parisian theater at the turn of the century.
Printed at the bottom, alongside her autograph, are these words:

"I find nothing better than a Petit-LU—oh yes, two Petit-LU."

At the turn of the twentieth century,
celebrity endorsements flourished rapidly alongside the rise of consumerism.
Mucha elevated what was once a modest, everyday biscuit into a refined, artistic delicacy.
At first glance, it appears to be a dazzling commercial triumph, selling a product through the allure of a great actress.

Yet in truth, the origin of this artwork had nothing to do with advertising biscuits.

Throughout Mucha's life, Sarah Bernhardt was his most definitive artistic muse.
It all began on December 26, 1894, the day after Christmas,
when the then-unknown Mucha hastily accepted a commission to design a poster for her play Gismonda.

On New Year's Day, January 1, 1895,
the innovative poster that filled the streets of Paris immortalized the mythic aura of the "Divine Sarah."
Deeply impressed, Bernhardt signed a six-year exclusive contract with Mucha for stage and costume design.

Then, on December 9, 1896,
a grand banquet in Sarah's honor was hosted at the Grand Hôtel in Paris by her friends and admirers.
For that special evening, Mucha created a portrait poster.
That very design would become the foundation for this artwork.
