The Port of Saint-Tropez

Under the blazing sun, red yachts with pristine white sails are moored in the Port of Saint-Tropez.

Locals leisurely stroll past the shops along the shore, and in the distance, the bell tower of the Church of the Assumption rises towards the blue sky.

A peaceful everyday scene bathed in Mediterranean sunlight. However, for the painter Maximilien Luce, this work was a testament to an 'encounter with light' that fundamentally transformed his previous self.

Luce, who came from the working class, had always empathized with those living at the bottom of society.

Until then, he had preferred to depict melancholic and dark-toned scenes, such as Parisian streets submerged in the night's darkness or gloomy London landscapes shrouded in fog.

A major turning point came for him in the summer of 1892, when he was invited by his friend, the painter Paul Signac, and set foot in Saint-Tropez in the South of France for the first time.

What awaited him there was the violent and intense light of the Mediterranean, utterly different from that of Paris or London.

The painter, who had previously depicted fog and darkness, was completely captivated by this new world.

He subtly introduced his favored purples and wisteria hues into the shadows, contrasting them with the vibrant oranges brought by the sun, thereby brilliantly capturing the dazzling glow unique to the South of France on canvas.

Furthermore, he deliberately broke away from the meticulous and uniform pointillist rules practiced by his contemporaries, varying the size of the dots as his emotions dictated, thus creating a vibrant pulse on the canvas that could not be achieved through calculation alone.

It was the moment a man who had long gazed into darkness awakened to the joy of dazzling colors and light.
