Dappled sunlight filtering through a lush green garden. A light pink silk dress fluttering in mid-air, and a tiny shoe innocently flung towards the sky.

At first glance, it's merely an elegant and romantic scene depicting a lady enjoying herself amidst beautiful nature. However, behind this painting lay a radical 'scandal' that challenged the moral values of society at the time.

The wealthy aristocrat who commissioned this painting requested that his mistress be depicted on a swing, with himself peeking up her skirt from beneath the bushes. Furthermore, he outrageously specified that a high-ranking clergyman, a bishop, should be pushing the swing from behind his mistress.

The first painter approached was so appalled by this immoral and dangerous request that he refused it. It was then that the painter Fragonard was chosen.

At the time, he was on an elite path as a prestigious history painter, but he was feeling constrained by delayed payments from the royal court and the rigid restrictions of the Academy, placing him at a crossroads in his artistic career. For him, this outlandish commission became a major turning point, allowing him to break free from his shell.

He cleverly changed the role of the swing-pusher from a bishop to an 'unwitting husband,' elevating it from a mere lewd painting to a sophisticated and exquisite work of art. He subtly embedded clues hinting at the game of love throughout the canvas, such as the statue of Cupid with a finger to his lips, seemingly encouraging a secret affair, and the small white dog at her feet barking fiercely, sensing the impending infidelity.

Having freed himself from the pressures of the Academy and ventured into a new style, what he depicted on the canvas was the joy of love, astonishingly light and full of vitality, without a trace of dark immorality.

Perhaps it was the irrepressible human passion and playful spirit, seemingly mocking old authorities, that liberated him from the suffocating constraints of society and the barriers in his career.
