The Tedious Story

However, as the painting's title suggests, what is actually unfolding here is an endless 'tedious boastful story'.

At the time, the painter Tissot had just fled the bloody civil war in Paris to London. Seeking a fresh start in a new land, he embarked on a series of genre paintings set along the River Thames.

What he depicted was not a dramatic scene or a romantic conversation, but an old soldier endlessly recounting his military career and heroic exploits, and a woman clearly fed up with it.

The woman's vacant expression reveals that not a single word from the old soldier is reaching her ears; her gaze wanders aimlessly, and her mind has completely escaped into another world.

No matter how grand the heroic tale, to an uninterested listener, it is merely tedious background noise.

Despite depicting a foreign scene from over 150 years ago, Tissot portrays a 'relatable awkward everyday situation' that resonates painfully with us today, doing so with a cynical yet remarkably calm observational eye.
