The Request
1892
Victorian eraPoignancyPrayer
One who pleads, and one who answers. The woman in the golden dress, with a tense expression, wraps a ribbon around her finger, and the man, too, tightly grips his hat.
The tension and tenderness between them. The composition, depicted from beyond the fence in the foreground, creates the illusion for the viewer of secretly peeking into a private moment between the two. The wordless exchange of emotions, common to Leighton's works, is condensed into this single painting.
