Eucharis - A Girl with a Basket of Fruit
1863
A classical colonnade bathed in soft sunlight. A young girl walks quietly forward, balancing a basket filled with luscious fruit upon her head. Her fair, translucent skin and striking hair—shimmering gold or red depending on the light—accentuate her sculpted profile.
The title "Eucharis" refers to a character from a novel set in the world of Greek mythology. She is a tragic nymph who falls passionately in love with a young man shipwrecked on her island, only to be torn apart and abandoned due to his "public duties."
Yet, surprisingly, one feels no sorrow of parting or dramatic tension from this painting.
