Behind her, the Mediterranean Sea stretches out, sparkling as it reflects the sunlight, and the entire canvas is enveloped in the sweltering heat of summer and a sensual beauty.

It is not a depiction of a specific narrative, such as mythology or religion, but rather a masterpiece of Aestheticism, which solely pursued 'art for art's sake'.

However, when this dazzlingly vibrant painting was created, the painter Leighton was suffering from a severe heart condition and knew his death was near.

In Victorian art, peaceful sleep was often depicted as a metaphor for 'death'. The oleander flowers gently placed above her head, while beautiful and fragrant, are highly poisonous and symbolized 'danger' or 'death' in the poetry of the time.

Despite being ravaged by illness, this work, which he completed by summoning his last reserves of strength, effectively became his final finished piece. As the footsteps of death drew near, what the aging painter imprinted on the canvas may not have been dark despair, but rather a serene sleep that seemed to last forever, and the overwhelming radiance of 'life' burning as if in defiance of it.

Furthermore, the work itself has a dramatic history. After the painter's death, as artistic trends changed, this painting was completely forgotten. In the 1960s, it was discovered behind a panel in a house being demolished on the outskirts of London, and at the time, it was sold for a paltry sum, as its frame was considered more valuable than the painting itself. However, it was later discovered by a Puerto Rican businessman, crossed the Atlantic, and, having made a miraculous comeback, it now enjoys enthusiastic popularity, hailed as the 'Mona Lisa of the Southern Hemisphere'.
