On the River

The dense trees are reflected like a mirror on the water's surface, and even the boat, which should naturally be brown, is magically dyed a vibrant emerald green.

Amidst this symphony of green that envelops the entire canvas, what particularly catches the eye is the woman's yellow parasol and her kimono-style dress.

The model for this painting is Sadie, the artist's beloved wife and artistic partner. At first glance, it might appear to be merely a serene and beautiful decorative landscape.

However, behind the artist Frieseke's depiction of this world, which could be called 'eternal summer,' lay his own liberation from a sense of suffocation.

The America in which he was born and raised was a society where Puritanical strict moral values still deeply persisted.

The atmosphere was not conducive to him freely pursuing what he truly wanted to paint: 'the pouring sunlight and women behaving freely beneath it.'

Escaping the restrictive constraints of his homeland, he moved to France and settled in Giverny, where Monet also lived. There, as if building his own paradise, he captured this dazzling world of light on canvas.

The yellow parasol, shining like a small sun in the center of the canvas, is not merely a prop but a symbol of the 'light' itself, which he yearned for above all else.
