Psyche Opening the Golden Box

In a dimly lit forest, a beautiful woman sits down and gently opens the lid of a golden box.

A wisp of smoke rises from the slight opening, and she peers into it as if drawn by an irresistible force.

However, what she has just opened in this box is not an item of hope, but a 'death-like deep sleep'.

Due to her extraordinary beauty, she incurred the fierce jealousy of Venus, the goddess of beauty.

Separated from her beloved husband, Cupid, the god of love, she was subjected to a series of 'impossible trials' by Venus to win him back.

The final challenge was to 'go to the Queen of the Underworld and obtain a 'beauty elixir' in a box'.

After an arduous journey, she successfully obtained the box, but she disobeyed the warning: 'You must never look inside'.

Yielding to the temptation to make herself more beautiful before reuniting with her beloved husband, she opened the forbidden box.

What emerged from it was not a beauty potion, but a magical smoke (or scent) that plunged people into a deep sleep.

Waterhouse depicted that very desperate moment when she, captivated by the sweet and dangerous curse of sleep rising from the box, succumbs to an irresistible slumber.

However, what the painter imbued in this work was not merely a 'foolish mistake' or a 'tragedy'.

As contemporary critics pointed out, Waterhouse viewed heroines, who might seem like victims tossed about by fate and magic, as 'victors whose souls blossom through hardship'.

Indeed, in the myth, Psyche (meaning 'soul' in Greek), after falling into this death-like sleep, is rescued by Cupid, who rushes to her, and ultimately joins the gods, attaining eternal love.

At first glance, it appears to be a scene of despair leading to irreversible ruin.

Yet, beneath it lies the human quality of making mistakes for love, and a definite hope for 'the salvation and transformation of the soul' beyond that.

Perhaps this is why her figure, just before falling into a deep sleep, is not dark and somber, but rather filled with a certain sweet and serene charm.
