He established a unique style of depicting invisible elements such as the shimmering of light, atmospheric nuances, and the scent of the wind as 'colors of sound,' and is generally regarded as the founder of 'Impressionist music' (though he vehemently rejected being categorized in such a way).

He also had deep connections with Symbolist poets and Impressionist painters, and drew significant inspiration from Japanese ukiyo-e prints and other sources.

Notable works include the symphonic poem La Mer, Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, and the piano piece Clair de lune, among others.
