Mother of the artist
1942
From a dark background, an elderly woman quietly emerges. Deeply etched wrinkles. A mouth that conveys strength of will. The contrast of light and shadow casts deep chiaroscuro upon her face.
The model is the artist's own mother, Anna Krahulec. Her maiden name was Veleba. She was born in the Bohemian region of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire in the early 1900s. Anna made the decision to leave her familiar homeland and cross the ocean.
