The model is the artist's own mother, Anna Krahulec. Her maiden name was Veleba. She was born in the Bohemian region of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire in the early 1900s. Anna made the decision to leave her familiar homeland and cross the ocean.
She arrived in Cleveland, America. Life in an unfamiliar land. Here, she raised her son, James. This portrait was painted in 1942. The world was in the midst of World War II.
