A leading composer of the Romantic era and one of the earliest significant orchestral conductors in music history. Born into a wealthy banking family in Hamburg, he received a top-tier musical education in a privileged environment. In 1835, in his mid-twenties, he was appointed conductor of the prestigious Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. He is also widely known for his profound study of J.S. Bach's then-forgotten works and his significant contributions to the revival of Bach's music. His refined style is characterized by a high-level fusion of the strict formal beauty of the Classical period, inherited from Mozart and Beethoven, and the passionate, rich lyricism characteristic of the Romantic era. He composed numerous masterpieces but, due to his extremely busy life, passed away prematurely at the young age of 38, to the great sorrow of many.
