個別的な自然形態を脱却し、直角と三原色・非色彩の組み合わせによって、宇宙の絶対的な均衡と普遍的調和を純粋な視覚的直感のみで表現すること。
✦ 見どころ（技法・色彩）
一見平坦に見えるが、白い区画ごとに筆を動かす方向（縦・横）が変えられており、光の当たり方で動的な質感が生まれる。黒い線は下地の白を塗った後に上塗りされ、何度も微調整された痕跡がある。また、黒い線がキャンバスの端で途切れる「クロップ効果」により、空間が外側へ無限に拡張していくような視覚的開放感を生み出している。
✦ この絵の舞台
フランス・パリ14区デパール街26番地にあるモンドリアンのアトリエ兼住居。モンパルナス駅の線路に隣接した古い雑居ビルの一室。室内は赤・青・黄・グレー・白に塗られた厚紙カードが壁に貼り巡らされ、家具や蓄音機に至るまで原色と無彩色で塗り分けられた、新造形主義の思想を立体化した「総体芸術」の実験場であった。

1930年。前年のウォール街暴落に端を発する世界恐慌が欧州を覆い、社会的・政治的不全感が深まっていた時期。パリの美術界ではシュルレアリスムが主流となる中、モンドリアンら前衛芸術家たちは国家や言語の壁を超えた「普遍的で揺るぎない秩序」を芸術の中に構築しようと試みていた。
